It is really important that English learners begin to use their phonics knowledge as much as possible to begin to decode words. This can often be difficult to do in Japan because as a parent you may be unsure of what books are appropriate and even if you do know what books to read they may be difficult to find or not at your local library. The most internationally well known graded reading program is the oxford reading tree. I have included a link to their website here. This program is fantastic and is used by a number of schools around the world. The stories and illustrations are fantastic and a big reason why this program is the obvious choice for anyone serious about having their child excel at reading in English. The only downside is that the program can get expensive because there are so many books in the series. If you are interested in purchasing the books you can do so from amazon here. If you are interested in a cheaper option to start you can look at sight word readers which you can find here.
